"1st time poster, long time reader. Ha (always wanted to say that)I just got a 2003 mercury 50 hp 2 stroke ob that I don't believe has ever been serviced. I changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel lines and squeeze balls all of which were original (the gas was filthy and varnished up). I doubt very seriously that the impeller or anything else has ever been changed. I ran it thru some sand and shortly after the heat alarms long steady beeeeeeep sounded. Also the pee stream stopped. After being shut off for awhile it cooled down and the alarm didn't sound again but the pee stream never started back, although the boat ran fine back to the dock at low speed. I plan on having the 6 yr old impeller replaced and also the fluids in the bottom 1/2. Should I do anything else? Is the water pump ok? Is there an easy way to clean out the pee tube like maybe with a weedeater line or something should it stop again after I get the impeller replaced? What should I look for or expect later? This is my 1st boat so I'm new at this. I hope this isn't par for being a boat owner. I can't afford to B ring O ut A nother T housand.
Thanks"

"Buy a factory manual and learn how to change the waterpump yourself. Change it every 2 years, change the housing every other waterpump change. Service the lowerunit oil every end of season, install new gaskets on the drain and fill screws every time. You can clean the pee tube with weed eater string without harm. Most of the water is going out the prop, the pee stream is just for you to see its not pumping. waterpump=impeller"
