"its that time of year again,

"its that time of year again, time to look things over before spring and summer season arrive. i have a 1994 volvo penta duo prop outdrive.

i tried to take the propellers off to grease the splines and they won't come off. i let wd40 sit in there overnight and i'll try again tomorrow. i know they can be heated off, but i would like to avoid that. a puller is also another option. my boat is used and don't know when they were last taken off. there is some hard white stuff on the splines, it looks like some sort of deposit.

i would like to know where could i get a puller to help with this? or even if a puller is the way to go? or even anything else you think i should try."

"1st boat, you might try anot

"1st boat, you might try another product that is actually designed to be a penetrating oil. WD40 is probably not the most effective option. Tap lightly on the shaft and or prop right after applying the spray. This tapping/vibration should help the liquid penetrate between the metal parts. Don't bang hard enough to hurt the prop, shaft, or bearings on the shaft!

good luck!"

"matt, what's that product

"matt, what's that product called? or should i just go find any penetrating oil?"

try a product called P.B. blas

try a product called P.B. blaster. available in most auto parts stores. very good stuff.

"1st boat, I was not thinking

"1st boat, I was not thinking of any particular product, just suggesting that you use a product that is actually formulated to act as a penetrant and do exactly what you are asking it to do... loosen stuck parts. P.B. Blaster is a good one, Liquid wrench is another. There are many out there. I'd just pick one and try it.

Good luck.

"tried to get it off this week

"tried to get it off this weekend but, no luck. do you guys know if i could use some sort of puller to get it off?"

"Hi
I have the same problem

"Hi
I have the same problem with my props.I tried blaster ,tried to heat them uo no luck.Did you et yours off

Matt"

I got my duoprop off this week

I got my duoprop off this weekend after 3 days. After taking the outer prop off I went ahead and built a prop puller by using a harmonic puller with 3 pieces of 1/4 inch chain and hooks at the end. I wrapped each chain/hook around each blade then began to add tension to the puller. Once I couldn't go any further i added pb blaster and soaked it over night with tension. next day I added some more tension and pb blaster. Finally on the third day I added just enough tension that it popped off.

NOTE. Leave the nut loose put on the shaft so when the prop pops off it does not go flying off the shaft.

"ay, this thing is such a head

"ay, this thing is such a head ache.

Walter, good tip, it sounds like you built a winner. happen to have any pics you could share?

Matteo, no i still haven't gotten the prop off. u?"

Note I ended up using a 20" Breaker bar with 9/16 socket to apply enough pressure to get it popped off."
