"Hello All,
I just bought an 89 Four Winns 150 Freedom, powered by a 89 48hp spl. When I got it home I lowered the motor by hand now I can't raise it(can't get it up)it seems like the tilt lock won't release (inside)the bracket. Any ideas.I am 3rd owner and was told it had no power tilt/trim but it has trim gauge and trim button on throttle.I did see a ram?(in middle of mounting bracket) when i first bought it.Thanks for any help"

"I just got an email about you

"I just got an email about your problem getting it up. Maybe I could forward it to you!

I have the same motor (1995) and replaced the tilt assist with real tilt/trim. Two things that come to mind: first, cold weather makes the oil thick and harder to raise the motor. Second, did you try the lever in both the up and down posistion? Seems to me that lever up allowed you to raise and loweer the motor and down locked the piston.

Trim button is standard on the throttle. non functional."

"Thanks Wish
Yes I did

"Thanks Wish
Yes I did try with lever in both pos.But still no get up, and I reamed on it. So the (Ram?)I saw is a tilt assist? Also where can I find a real tilt and trim unit? Since you have the same motor is it powerfull enough to pull a skier? Thanks for your help"

My motor is on a pontoon so it

My motor is on a pontoon so it does not perform well. Since the four winns is better design you might be able to get up but it won't be a great ride.

I bought my tilt trim piston off ebay. it came with the unit only. I think it is the same unit for the 40-50hp models. I sold the tilt assist unit on ebay and got nearly half what I paid for the tilt/trim.

Did you check to see if the wire that goes from the lever looks like it is moving. It will move a little as the wire inside in moving. Check the lever itself. the lever connects the wire with plastic and it could easily break and therefore not work. I'm surprised it went down if it was wasn't working so it may be a cable or lever issue.

I don't have my manual her

I don't have my manual here at the house but isn't there a screw on the hydraulic unit that you can turn that would "disengage" the hydraulics? The motor would be heavy but you would be able to lift it and then use the bracket that holds the motor in the up position. I would recommend 2 people for this job.

Ok I sorta have a similar prob

Ok I sorta have a similar problem. I just bought a johnson 40 hp 1985. Put it onto my boat and the motor appears to be locked in the up position. Any Hints?

"There is a lever on the top p

"There is a lever on the top port (left) side of the motor that is put into place to rest the motor on instead of on the piston of the tilt assist unit. It should be located right above where the steering rod passes into the bracket housing. Flip it so it is in the up position.

I have found the manual and the lever on the Starboard side should forward or up to lift and lower the motor. it should be back or down to lock for run postion."
