CANbT ENGAGE IN FOWARD PLEASE HELP

I have a 1984 sea ray with a 5

I have a 1984 sea ray with a 5.0 liter chevy engine and a OMC stern outdrive. My problem is whenever I try to engage in foward my engine just runs just like it is neutral. When the problem first arrived I could ease it into foward and it would only spin a little bit but now it will not engage at all. Reverse works fine.

I think my outdrive # is 326482

Any help would be greatly appreciated

"Is your drive, electric shift or manual/cable. If it is manual I would check the cable for adjustment. Mine is electric shift and I lost forward gear when under way last week. It lost the forward gear electro magnet in the lower. Still had reverse to get me accross the lake and back to the ramp. If electric, check the wiring going into the lower for any shorts or cracked coating that would let water in. I'm brand new to OMC so I'm not sure this would apply to your drive. Just a thought..."

I am pretty sure mine is Electric and I will check that out. I also had to drive in reverse for about 20 min to get back to the dock.

If it was the forward magnet that let go, the repairs can be done "backyard garage". Just let me know what you find and I'll try to help as best I can. It's not a huge job replacing the seals and the electro mag."
