"As some of you may remember, I started a rebuild on a 1984 galaxy classic last summer. Over the winter i aquired an 11 year newer stern drive from a Searay. Both have merc 140's powering them. My original stern drive is in bad shape (pitted , rust etc.) the newer one is show room clean. It says Alpha one on the stern drive. Can I just use this newer one in place of my old one? May be a gen 2 I have no idea how I would know. Any help on this would be great. I purchased a used motor that I am happy with but the motor I took from the searay has a digital electronic ignition on it. can I just swap the parts over to my motor which has the old points setup? The newer motor sat for 2 years with a blocked drain plug in the boat so it was partialy covered in water and probly has freeze damage that is why I want to switch out parts instead of using the newer motor. I also have an 11 year younger carb that looks great compared to my 26 year old stuff. The Searay doesnt appear to have ever seen salt water where as my drive was barnicle covered when i took it off the boat so i hope i can just switch out all these newer parts, thanx guys. Mike"

"just to clarify, the parts i want to put in my boat come from a 1995 searay. Both boats have mercruiser 140's and as far as I can see they both have alpha one stern drives.thanx"

"but will it bolt rite up to my motor? thats what i really want to know. and if not what do i need from the motor to make it bolt on since i have both motors, thanx btw Bondo"

"Did you check the new motor a

"Did you check the new motor at all as the oil? Did you try to crank it over.

You have everything from the new motor, or boat from the flywheel back i mean everything, inner transom bracket ,fly wheel everything?"

"I removed the drain plugs and

"I removed the drain plugs and alot of water came out of it. The deal was I had to strip it and dispose of it rite now or it was going to be scrapped. So i couldnt get it running as it was in a bad place for any kind of work to be performed. The answer is yes I have EVERYTHING. I took everything except the hull and the windshield. I have the motor in my yard now, I have no garage and limited space. I am assuming that the motor has freeze damage because it sat for two years and was never drained. Also the motor sat in water just above the oil pan and I am sure it froze that way over the winter so I am going with the motor that I bought. I would really like to be able to bolt on the gen 2 drive if possable and maybe use the electronic ignition but thats not as important to me as the drive is. I plan on stripping the remainder of the motor for parts. Thanx Chiefalen"

"Mike Yank off the old drive.

"Mike Yank off the old drive. yank out the older motor, take the flywheel and coupler off the new motor and install it on your old motor.

Yank out the old inner transom plate, install the new inner transom plate. In stall the new bell housing to the old motor,Install the motor and new bell housing in the boat.

Install new gimbel bearing and all, then align the motor, with a alignment bar.

If i were you i would install new bellows, and install a new impeller in the drive.

Install, drive.

And let us know if you need any advice on the way.

Good luck, Good days work"

"Thanks Chief thats the info I

"Thanks Chief thats the info I was looking for. I planned on doing the bellows and the impeller already. That will be a great job for later in the summer after I get the rest of the boat back together. I have completely rebuilt my boat, new stringers and transom. As soon as the weather gets reliable i am putting in the foam and building a floor. Then its motor time. Thanks again for the information this is a great resource. When its all done I will post pictures of the entire process including the upper half of my boat hanging from a tree, hey had to seperate the two halves somehow
. Hopefully moving to Ontario within the year and want this all done in time for the move. Thanks again"

"I had my motor hanging betwee

"I had my motor hanging between 2 trees in my backyard, 4 times, the 2x10 is still lashed there, i hang my deer off that wood, when i skin 'em.

I think the 3.8l motor in my sons 1996 camaro will be hangin off that wood this summer maybe?

Good luck mike."
