Can I DIY a leak down tester

Back again, with my 1980ish Mariner 55 2 cylinder (Yamaha).

I have been told a couple of times from different sources that my crankshaft seals need replacing. Is there anything to be gained from a leak down test? I have no reason to doubt what I am told, this is an old outboard that gives me lots of trouble consistently when trying to get going. If it goes it will run strong, but there is a lot of frustration in getting it into gear and moving.

Can I seal the carbs with a piece of rubber held over the air horns and secured with the air box? Can I connect a leak down tester to the vacuum ports between the carbs and reed blocks?

Can I make my own tester from a few connections, a gauge, and a hand pump?

I have two power heads, one on the boat and one as part of a motor I bought for spares. I'd like to compare them and pick the most suitable for a rebuild, if either is worth spending money on.

Damn near impossible to test a crankcase like you said. Replacing the crank seals--especially the top one--is an easy job.
