"Alex.... Okay, then now we shall give you a proper response...... maybe.

On that model, J4BRCIC, (1981 4hp Johnson), there are just two retaining bolts. I'm sure you have removed both of them as they are quite obvious.

The lower unit should now simply drop away as there is nothing else that would normally keep it attached.

However, if the lower unit still refuses to drop off, it is usually due to the upper driveshaft splines being frozen within the crankshaft splines. This type problem is caused by someone not installing the upper driveshaft "O" Ring and/or not greasing the upper driveshaft splines.

There is a shift rod on that engine BUT if memory serves me correctly, that type shift rod simply slides out of the lower unit (and slips back in) to actuate the shift setup. If I am incorrect in stating that the shift rod removes and installs in this fashion, I'm sure that another tech will be along shortly to correct this statement.

If I am correct in the above, then the driveshaft will need to be forced out of the crankshaft splines somehow."

Shop.evinrude.com ---does not

Shop.evinrude.com ---does not show a shift function for that model#.So recheck your model# or post a picture of your lower unit.

"Does'nt that model have a clutch in the gear box? Features neutral and forward, no reverse. In a matter of speaking, the shift rod would be a clutch linkage, instead of a shifter.

By-the-way, maybe a thanks, or some kind of appreciation may get you better/timely responses. These guys are'nt getting paid to do this."

Ok taking a look at the internal details on shop. evinrude.com ---- this unit has a simple wrap spring clutch ( nuetral and forward only )and there is no connecter. It appears that you just pull down the assembly and make sure that the shift rod goes back into the hole to do its thing.
