The engine starts and runs fairely well, but if i touch the control for the speed , i get a high power electrical shock. I have changed the coil , points , condenser, and plug wire cover and boot. And it still gives a shock.... Any ideas?

A friend of mine had a Ski-Doo that did that to him whenever he attempted to turn the key switch to off....ZAP!!...yikes!
I don't remember what the fix was, it was many years ago.
In any event, you must have some part of the secondary ignition circuit grounding out to the speed control. Maybe a wire is rubbed through somewhere. Inspect all parts of the ignition system, including all connectors, wires, and grounds. I have found the darndest of electrical problems after conducting a thorough visual inspection.
Good luck with it!

Usually caused by a loose, broken, or non existent ground wire. I'll look thru my book to see if anything is obvious and get back to you.

+1 on the ground wire from the armature plate under the flywheel to the block. Did you push the plug wire all the way into the coil and then install the boot before you installed the coil into the armature plate?

joereeves and kimcrwbr1: This has piqued my curiousity. The armature plate on my motor has no ground wire connecting it to the engine block.
Isn't the armature plate already grounded? It bolts onto that brass ring which encircles the top seal, wouldn't it ground through that?
Or is the design on the 2 hp a total different animal?

I would like to know

Even if the mag plate has metal bushings if it has the points type ignition the groud wire is allways present.

Well , thank you all for your input. the ground wire was the problem. it looked good on the outside, but was broken internally. thanks again to you all! now does anyone know the procedure for replacing a water pump impeller?

Hi joe i replaced my water pump impeller, and my question to you is .,(should the engine be squirting water outof the exhaust holes on the engine.?) There is some water coming out but not in a steady stream. Thanks joe!:

On that model, it'll be just a water spray of sorts... not a steady stream.

I have an older model Evinrude 2 HP that had a lot of overheating trouble.
I tried replacing the impeller...that didn't help much. The local dealer told
me that they are notorious for overheating. He sold me a water pump "retrofit kit"
which includes a stainless steel bowl, plate, plastic cover, impeller (different size), etc.
The amount of spray increased considerably. It only overheats near WOT now.
Contact your dealer about the kit.
