I would put my money on the motor. If the solenoid is clicking it likely working. A test light would verify this. I don't know if the motors can be rebuilt. Mine is on a Generation 1 and I couldn't see any way to rebuild it. So I ordered a new one from Go-2 Marine.

"My Merc trim pump is a 1984 and has the original brushes. Every 4 to 5 years just take the top cap off and clean the commutator and brushes and lightly oil both ends of the armature shaft and replace cap. It is remarkable how long the brushes lasted. If the pump is in a wet area , condensation can rust it inside also."

Hate to intrude on this post but my trim pump has a large oil filter on the bottom of it. is this a regular maintinance item? it works so well i kinda hate to fool with it but i will if its recomended 84 alpha 1

"the only filter in them is a screen, as long as the oil stays clean, there's no reason to touch it. If you have a plastic opaque one with a red or black cap, not bad idea to take that off and clean it out once in a while does get a little sludgy in there. Good to look for cracks too.."

"Brian it looks just like an oil filter and with further inspection it has merc part # and all there writeing what i did take note of is it has a 9/16 head nut on the bottom wich im sure is what holds it on kinda like the old style diesle fuel filters if ya will. but the thing works like a charm does all i ask it to do goes up and holds so the old saying goes if it aint broke dont bother it
