can a leaky gasket cause this problem?

ok had the boat out but i sprung a leak in the gasket for the cover that sits in front of the head . the gasket sits between the cover and the head. tried to fix it and i made it worse so i will remove the cover and change the gasket. there was alot ov water running down the motor over the ignition coil wires and the plug wires. the motor bogged down and stalled and would not restart. can this water cause this problem?
