Cam Rotation - Mercruiser MIE260 - (Chevy 350 small block)

Here is some background to my question. I have a 83 nautique with a Mercruiser MIE 260 (Chevy 350 small block). I've had the boat for 12 years and used it frequently with no hassle. The motor is a RH/reverse rotation. The timing works with a gear. The crank rotates reverse and everything else (camshaft/oil pump/ distributor) rotates normal. The firing order is reversed (12756348). One of the push rods bent so I had to strip the engine.

I ended up buying another motor which turned out to be a bad buy. This was a LH rotation working with a timing chain (crank and cam rotate the same direction-LH). I ended up using the crank, camshaft and pistons from this motor and put it in the original block. The camshaft from the original motor somehow went missing. The pistons, as in the original motor was turned around, and the main bearing seal is different for the reverse rotation, which is the only difference I picked up from forums (and comparing to the original motor). My uncertainty is around the camshaft I used from the LH rotation engine. I cannot get certainty if the camshaft should be different to a LH rotation, since it still turns the normal direction.

After assembly the motor does start but blows air back out the carburettor and then shortly thereafter dies.

Looking for the part on amazon (Small Block Chevy MARINE REVERSE ROTATION Engine Camshaft Melling 22125) it states "REVERSE Cam ROTATION ENGINES ONLY !!!, IF you have a chain drive timing set, and the cam AND crank BOTH turn REVERSE you do need this. IF you have a 2 gear timing set, and the cam and crank turn OPPOSITE directions from each other - you do NOT need this, you need a standard marine cam". This suggests I need a normal camshaft.

I need to import the part which will be pricy and do not want to end up buying the wrong thing. Hence, my questions are, can I use a standard rotation (LH) camshaft or do I need a reverse rotation camshaft? and why else would the air blow out the carburetor?
 
As far as parts compression to study between the right hand and left hand for your engine model 260MIE, the 2 following websites will mention all the components that are different when needed.

Two questions come to mind for clarification purposes though they may sound sort of dumb.
What engine starter (rotation) are you using? the original or something new to you? and being MIE, "possibly" what location is the engine starter mounted/now?

Did you use (reuse?) the timing gear set from the original?, Items 10 - 12, https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER43-14324

For that vintage, all standard production GM marine engines used a two gear drive system in the RH engines. These cams have two significant differences compared to their LH counterparts - the drive connection (gear/sprocket interface) and the relative locations of the lobes on the cam.

The LH camshaft will NOT work in a RH rotation engine and is likely the cause for abnormal behavior of the engine. Regarding the part you identified, I went thru this exercise not too long ago. I resolved it by contacting Melling directly. the 'note' on several Amazon seller pages is wrong regarding the 22125 cams. If you want, I can get you the Melling part numbers for both gears if desired.

Also, when you 'reversed' the pistons, I trust you separated the pistons from their respective rods? Also, did you measure the parts to ensure the correct bearings were used?
 
Thank you for those resposnes. The starter is a normal rotation starter mounted on the flyweel (stern side). I used the same timing gear set from the original motor. With regards to the pistons, they were seperated from the connecting rod and turned around. The parts were measured for correct bearing size.

This leaves the cam which seems incorrect. @ makomark, i'll accept your offer to help with the part numbers and maybe a good place to buy that will not break the bank. I don't know what to look for to get the correct firing order since it seems that RH rotation does not equate to a firing order of 12756348, since both the crank and cam can rotate RH (or does this not make a difference?)

The Melling 22125 should work in a SBC using the two gears driving the cam setup...you cam use the original gears for the cam drive is they aren't worm. That should let you use the original distributor if it isn't worn as well...the firing order should be the standard RH one...

You can verify the cam by sending an email to Mellings tech support if you want to double check it...
As long as the starter spins the engine in RH direction, you should be good.
 
When you use the gear drive, the crank rotates RH'ed and the cam spins in the opposite direction and is 'normal' and the firing order should be as you posted and should be on the ID plate as well.
 
A Sealed Power (or SpeedPro) CS1044M camshaft should have the same grind as the Melling 22125 and use the two gear cam drive system.

Melling part Numbers are 2534 for the cam gear and 2535 for the crank gear...
