" I HAVE 3-CYLINDER CALLESEN DIESEL 425 CO-ENGINE IN MY TRAWLER. THE ENGINE HASN'T RUN DURING LATEST TWO YEARS AND PISTONS ARE JAMMED. THERE ARE A SLIGHT CORROSION DAMAGES IN THE CYLINDERS.

I HAVE TRIED TO LOOSE PISTONS BY USING DIESEL OIL AS A SOLVENT AND TO PUSH PISTONS BY HYDRAULIC JACK FROM ABOVE, BUT PISTONS DIDN'T LOOSE AND THEY ARE STILL JAMMED. TOTAL CYLINDER DISPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE IS ABOUT 60 LITRES(PISTON DIAMETER IS 250MM AND STROKE IS 400MM). THERE IS 5 PISTON RINGS IN EACH CYLINDER (TWO GUIDING RINGS, TWO OIL RINGS AND ONE CHROME RING).

WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT? THE ENGINE HAS A PNEUMATIC START - IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE STARTING DEVICES IN THE LOOSING PROCESS? IS IT SAFE TO PUSH PISTONS BY 15TONS HYDRAULIC JACKET? "

"Tpeltone,

First of all you

"Tpeltone,

First of all you should use a good pentrating oil like Kroil or WD-40 (sold by the gallon) and let it soak for a good long time. Diesel is not the same.

Don't use the starter.

There are a lot of methods for loosening stuck pistons... the antique engine hobbyists have many articles written about it. Your case is probably not that bad in comparison. I would consider letting it soak... then make up an endgrain wooden disk the same diameter as the piston that you can put into the bore. While it is soaking give the disk/pistons an occasional "tap" on the disk. Often a "tap" will work better than constant pressure, and may open up some small passages for the penetrating oil to seep into. After soaking and tapping for a couple of weeks... try some constant pressure again, but be sure to spread the load evenly so you don't break the piston.

Don't use air. Another method would be to pump grease into the cylinder above the piston... but I would soak with penetrating oil and tap first.

Regards,
Andrew"

" Tpeltone ,

Try to remove

" Tpeltone ,

Try to remove the big end bushes and then remove the liners with pistons inside it .
You must change the liners caz it will be rusty and damaged because of the rings rust effect or u can using them again (I prefer not) after removing pistons using any way to do that and if the pistons r in a good mood u can use them againe after replacing the rings .

Kiralla "
