Good evening, everyone. I have a '96 C40. About 10 years ago, I was having trouble that it ran great, but when at a high RPM, after about 10 minutes, it would bog down and try to die. I could drop it down to an idle (still in gear), and it would sound good, but could not throttle it up without it bogging down. After about 5 minutes, I could throttle up and go another 10 minutes before it would come up again. During this time, I also noticed one time that I had a bit of gas coming out of the bottom of the air intake - but it was only once, and while trying to clean the carbeurators with carb cleaner (trying to see if I had something plugging a jet).
Then, life became really busy and I didn't have time to use the boat for about the last 10 years. Ran it at home every once in a while, but didn't really get to use it. Now, things are slowing down, so took it out today to see how it would run. It was a bit hard to start, and what I found was that I had to periodically hit the choke for a second to keep it from stalling at an idle. At high RPMs, it normally ran fine, but every once in a while, it would start to bog a bit, so I would hit the choke for a few minutes (just push in for a second, then release - wait about 5 seconds, then do it again) - after a while, it started running fine again at high RPM. Low RPM continues to be an issue - if I don't push in the choke for a second when it starts running rough, it would die on me. Likewise, if it did die, when I would give it some gas and start it, it would really rev up high as long as I worked the choke.
I'm guessing I need to rebuild the carbs, but wanted to see if there's any other possibilities.
Thanks!
