Buzzing noise.

Outboard is 2004 Yamaha 115 4 stroke, year 2004, 96 hours. I had an independent mechanic come out to change the water pump impeller. The disassembly went good and the rubber impeller showed cracks, with all fins in place. He had the wrong part and came back the next morning to finish the impeller and also changed the gear oil which he said was clean. Now I have a buzzing sound with engine running and in neutral. Can't notice it when in gear. Ran motor for two hours at cruise speed with no problems. Buzzing sound still there when in neutral at the dock. Could something with the new impeller or gear oil cause this buzzing sound? I'd like to learn as much as I can about this before I call him back.
 
No ambush intended. Just want to learn is all. If I get resistance from him, I'll probably take it apart and inspect it myself. I've got a noise now I didn't have before and I'd like to find out what it is.
 
What you will need to do is start the engine and move the shifter,slowly, slightly(Not enough to put it into gear) forward or backwards and see if the noise stops. If the noise stops, then some how your shift mechanism got out of adjustment.
