Buzzer question

Since I'm pretty new at this, I have what may be a dumb question.

I have a 95 Glastron Sv-195 with the 4.3 Chevy engine. There looks to be a buzzer under the dash for oil pressure and temperature.

Should the buzzer sound when I turn the key to start the engine?

It doesn't now... in fact I didn't know there was a buzzer until the mechanic mentioned it. I had an overheating issue (now taken care of) a few weeks ago and while I caught the problem on the gauge, the buzzer never sounded.

If I know when it should buzz, I can start by checking the voltage to the buzzer.

Turn the key to the "ON/RUN" position. Some apps sound off right away, some have a delay circuit. Wait a couple of minutes. If it doesn't sound off, check for voltage at the buzzer. You should have something as there is no oil pressure yet. If you have 12 volts there, the buzzer is deffective. If no 12 volts, the pressure switch is faulty. More likely since you overheated. You could also jump the wire on top of the switch to ground with the key on; it should sound off the alarm.

Thanks for the response.

I have 12 volts at the buzzer and it comes on as soon as you turn the key. I'll have to put a new buzzer in and maybe a LED light somewhere.

Big John;
Your first post says the buzzer doesn not work, and your next post says it does?
As was said it should buzz when you turn the ignition key, because at least your low oil pressure switch should be activating it.
For your engine the buzzer will sound in case of low oil pressure, high coolant tmeperature or low drive lube level.
My original switch was 1996, and I had to replace it 2 years ago.

Hey this is my first post after a 3 year hyatus, and I am glad to see several familiar names including Bondo, Bt Doctur, and KGhost.
Cheers all,

Guy;
Thanks! Good to see you are still on the forum as well.
I did not recognize your user name at first; did you change it along the way?

Rod: I think I did change it several years back. I sold my Nissan Titan because I coudn't afford 10/mile per gal. gas cost and sold my Baretta w/4.3L Alpha 1 last spring because it was too much boat for me to handle in/out of the water. But, I still hang around here since I've not much to do in the hot summer; kids are gone. I retired 1/06 and turned 60 last June; not able to get around very well anymore. I bought a 2002 ProCraft 170 w/a Mercury 115 hp outboard for fishing. Do you still have your stroker?

Rod, Three years off and you start out by answering my thread... Wow... I'm honored.

To make it clear, I checked for voltage at the buzzer. The buzzer doesn't work, of course... but now I know that it is the buzzer itself at fault. What I probably should have written is that there is power (12 volts) at the buzzer when the key is in the "on" position and the engine isn't running.

All is good, I found a Mallory buzzer on Ebay and it's on it's way here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_W0Q...emZ190564771084QQsspagenameZSTRKQ3aMEWNXQ3aIT Actually it's more of a chime then a buzzer, but if it works to tell the MacDonalds employee to pull the fries out, it's good enough for me. I'll mount this to the dash rather then tie wrapping the buzzer to the wiring harness as Glastron elected to do. BTW, if you want to buy one, Dave doesn't take paypal, but it's OK because he's a real hoot to talk to on the phone.

Big John;
Sounds like you have it covered. I am sure that will cure your problems, and I am glad that you noticed the overheating before it caused serious problems.

Guy; sorry to hear you sold your 4.3; they are a great boat package. Yes I still have the Blue Water with the 383 Stroker installed, and it is running great. Just got back from a successful month at the lake with it. The engine now has 90+ hours on it and all is well. I have not blown up the Alpha Gen II drive with it, but the kids all love wakeboarding and kneeboarding behind it. They are up out of the water right now.
