I am considering buying an 1983 248 sportsman. It has 900 hrs on the engine and outdrive. A Volvo/ penta 5.7 w/ 280 outdrive. It is FWC...do you think the engine is ready to die. It has been well maintained. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

. I would run a compression test and check the oil pressure. If both are OK, I would give the boat a test drive and take it from there. Also, the 280 drives are virtually indestructible.

Even if the power plant turns to be in top shape, I would also have a close look to the condition of the hull (floors, transom stringers) as well as fuel tank(s), electrical, etc. You may want to hire a marine surveyor unless the boat has a recent survey."

"El P is right, as always. The floor, transom and stringers would be a bigger concern for me than the motor. Make sure they are solid, not rotten. It is more expensive to fix rotten stringers, transom and floor than replace a motor. Check compression, oil condition, make sure it is not milky. Is this boat run in fresh water or salt? Condition of the manifolds, have they bee n recently replaced? To be sure, get it surveyed."

"I bought a 1992 Wellcraft last year, and it was all rotten, transom, stringers, and floor. Yes they may be a good boat, but if they are neglected, they will rott just like any boat.

Have a great day,

Rob."
