Burned Paint

"Good evening,
I aquired a 35hp SeaHorse that started and ran fine except for a stubborn foward gear. All was well until last two times I took it out.

Toward the end of a run, I noticed smoke , but could not locate the source. Last time I took it out, it smoked worse, died on me, and I noticed the paint on the exhaust housing about six inches below the powerhead was browned and bubbled.

I suppose this indicates a bad water pump. Is my engine fried too? I was able to get it to start and run again, but only for short periods. It acted like it wasn't getting spark.

Any thoughts?

"Overheating a engine to that

"Overheating a engine to that degree causes a majority of bolts to loosen on the powerhead. Remove the cylinder head and clean the sealing surfaces of the head and block, then install a new head gasket.

You don't say what the year of the engine is but the usual cylinder head bolt torque is 18 to 20 foot pounds, tightened in the following sequence.

9...10
5....6
1....2
4....3
8....7

Install a complete new water pump kit, and in the future have someone keep a eye on the water outlet to avoid a repeat scenario."
