Broken shift shaft

Hello all. I have a 86 model 25 horse Evinrude model number E25RCDC. The motor had apparently fell over on the shift lever which severely bent the shift shaft (part number 039574 shift shaft) upon trying to straighten it it simply broke off flush to the motor. How to remove and replace? Thanks for helping old beat up retired Ironworker.

You'll have to pull the power head to replace it.

Do I need to strip the everything off the top or can much of it be left in a assembly. After the main bolts are there any tips or tricks to look for. Does the power head lift off cleanly or does it take a lot of effort?

No, you can pull the power head as a complete assy. All you should need is a P/H gasket and new shift parts. Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your mtr. They have good parts diagrams. You should also get a service manual.
