"So how do you get a broken EZ-out out? Drill it with a titanium bit? How do you center the bit, it's recessed quite a ways in the hole. Starter R&R in a 3.0 is now getting complicated. I have the engine out on the floor, no stand. What are the tricks/tips? Thanks"

"Need more info
What style of ez out, square & tapered, round/spiral/tapered?
Is it in a thru hole or a blind hole?
Where exactly is the ez out stuck?
I doubt you will drill it out, it is as hard or harder than the standard hardware store drill. The coated drill will not help either.
There may be a few ways of digging out a broken ez out but depends on the info you provide."

In my plant we have a toolroom that deals with these issues. You may be able to mill it out with a carbide end mill. Notice I said "mill"- not a hand held drill motor. The sure method is a tap burner which is simple ram EDM machine (which will also work great). These all entail putting the workpiece on the machine. There are other methods if the part cannot be removed and I can let you know what they are but they not DIY.

"Depending on the type and siz

"Depending on the type and size of easy out. if it has flutes down the side where you can grip it with the ends of a good pair of circlip pliers, or a good needle nose if the flutes are large enough (and cross grip the ends with vicegrips for torque)you 'may' be able to loosen it up.. I have used a pinpoint heating torch, to expand the broken piece, then dry ice to shrink it. Once the ends of the circlip or needle nose pliers are in the flutes, and the vice grips are clamped across them, you 'may' be able to torque it out by leavering the vise grips.. Depends on how much heat and cold you can get to the broken piece..
Have fun!!! If it's a cheap part, you will probably have to replace it anyway.. If it's a engine block, you have your work cut out for you.."

"The EZ out is one of those with the LH twist.

The broken bolt is the outer one of the two closest the flywheel, I was considering drilling down through the casting from the top, the break is recessed in the hole about an inch in from the rim of the bolt hole. If I drill down from the top I can a least saturate the broken stud with PB blaster while I wait for a warm day to work on it. Whataya' think?"

"Can you turn the engine on it

"Can you turn the engine on its side to get to the back side of the broken bolt? Place a drill press over that end and drill out the majority of the broken bolt starting in the center w/a 1/8" bit and move up in size until you get the majority of the bolt out. Use sharp bits, light pressure and plenty of cutting oil."

"I was also thinking of tappin

"I was also thinking of tapping the the hole ahead of where the break occured (it's about 1/2 inch in length) the next size bigger, 7/16" and threading a stud to replace the bolt. Of course I'd have to drill out the mount hole on the starter.

What drill bit will auger into an ez out? I do have it resting on the fly wheel end cover plate now."

"There are no standard drill bits hard enaugh to drill ez outs. However, if you have access to a mapgas tourch or better yet a oxy acetelene tourch, you can soften the ez out by heating it to cherry red and cooling it veeeeeery slowly so you can drill it with a hand drill."

"Thanks Bill, it was my understanding that an ez out was too hard for anything std. to touch. As fortune would have it this was the outer bolt near the flywheel, so I was able to drill a 1/8" hole down through the cast from the top, right over the ez out and viola a tap on the bit with a hammer sent the broken tip to the floor. I cut a slot in the softer broken bolt tip with a dremel tool and turned it out with a screw driver. It looks like the threads are undamaged enough to still use, though I'm thinking of adding a set screw to the arrangement, or Locktite."
