Bravo power trim issue 2000 5.7

"2000 5.7 carbed bravo3. The trim pump does run in both directions, but the leg will only go up, not down. The reservoir had watery oil and some thicker goo in the bottom of it. I took off the reservoir and cleaned it,also cleaned the screens and put new oil in but that didnt help.
How do i diagnose whether the problem is in the pump or the rams?
Anyone have diagrams of the pump? How to rebuild it if its the problem?"

One usually moves faster than the other but if the system is working the one that lags will catch up in either direction.

Also now that you have filled the resevoir, break a line ( i forget which one is Up or down) but relieve the pressure, retightened and retry.

Did you use power steering fluid? or dextron II?

you may need to run and flush what ever is left in system"

"The rams are disconnected from the leg, both in the full out position. The trim worked on the way up, but wouldn't go down at all. Again the pump runs strong, they just don't go down.
I used 20w non detergent motor oil."

"Well I know they specify power steering fluid for current power trim pumps. I dont know how 20 w will affect the performance.

makes sense that the up pressure relief valve is stuck. I will try that procedure monday.
 
"No luck. Took the pump apart

"No luck. Took the pump apart today and cleaned everything inside it. Didn't help. I reconnected the rams to the leg, took both lines off both rams and stood on the leg and it doesn't move.
When i started this mess the rams were in the down position and it had no problem going up.
I do notice when i push the up button to kinda max it out in the up position, then hit the down button, it seems to move just a hair down, for a split second, then the tone of the pump changes and the leg wont move down."

"I don`t profess to know much about it but, in the past, if I let the leg come all the way up and don`t release the trim switch quick enough ( or in other words, let the pump run on for a couple extra seconds after leg is all the way up ) my leg with freeze in the up position. To get it down, I have to hold the switch in the down position and get someone of sufficient weight to stand on leg and even bounch a bit to get it to start down. As soon as it starts, they can get off and it will work fine both up and down until the next time I fail to let the switch go so enough when raising it.
I have heard of others having the similar thing happen to them. It`s probably something that could be adjusted but I have no clue how so am just very careful when raising leg to trailering posotion."

It sounds like something in the rams is stuck!

If you remove both trim lines from the rams and the outdrive still will not go down then it has to be the rams, one or both.

With the hydrualic lines disconnected from the rams you should be able to move the rams by hand. As the fluid gets forced out the movement should get easier. You may need to put some extra pressure but they should move rather freely.

That bieng said, it sounds like it is time to dissassemble one or both and a good cleaning is in order. Most times in my experience is a good cleaning of the internals and some grease on the orings and seals and they typically will work fine.

I had the shop "boy" replace the pump with a known good pump and now it works like its supposed to.
I'd still like to know what isn't right in the old pump. When i took it apart there wasn't much to it.

Even though a trim pump will run, that does not mean it is making pressure.

If you were to look even closer at the valving assembly it has several valves and if a piece of crap got stuck in any one of them it cause all kind of issues.


In this case if a new pump corrected the issue the I would speculate the down curcit valving is either clogged or bad.

The page I copied for the above diagram comes from the manual and it also has a complete troubleshooting proceedure.

I personally never have troubleshot one. They seem to be a remove and replace item as the time and cost to trouble shoot usually equals the cost of a new one.

Maybe back in the '60's or '70's it was feesible but today at $70-$90 per hour plus parts it is easier to replace it.

Just so you know I have a brand new pump assembly in my basement just in case..........as I dont have the test tools for the trim pump system."
