Bravo III oilchange

Just changed the oil on my BRAVO III and noticed that the oil in the resovior did not empty. I didn't check for a clogged resovior yet but will do that next week. If it is not clogged could the hose be clogged to the Bravo III? If so how do I unclog it?

I did pour out old oil and refilled with Hi Performance Oil. I still don't understand why when all the oil in the outdrive was empied why didn't the oil in the resovior drain out? I removed the cap on the resovior and all oil in the outdrive was out.Was it just because it was cold old oil?
 
When i replaced my bellows and hoses from drive to transom. i replaced the drive oil hose and the fitting just outside the boat its a free flowing system.

i would think to check for a clog or kink you could remove the drive partial without disengaging the drive linkage. an open partial space between the drive and bell housing should keep your oil stem in the open position and drain your reservoir in about 2 minutes, very messy. if it doesn't, you have a problem. either at the stem on the bell housing or at the reservoir itself.

if it drains, then maybe the female fitting inside the sterndrive is clogged or damaged. you could also after drive is installed, drain about half the oil out, to what is normal. start the engine and put the drive in forward and reverse with very very low rpm and the reservoir should drain very fast, to supply the missing low oil, also when your reservoir is empty you should get an alarm. if not the drive would be the place to look. female connection and just beyond with out looking at a manual.
 
I think it just has to run for awhile then fill in the resovior with oil.I understand there is a oil valve that is in the closed position until engine is running and in forward or reverse gear.
 
The insanity has just begun with me. This conflicts with the latest comment I got on this subject in iboats.com
There is a valve or there isn't a valve. I will not know or sure unless I take the outdrve off which I wil not do just to check who is correct. It looks like either way will work. Next me I wil try the final fill with drive down and cap off with vent hole closed and see if it comes out of the resovior.

There is no valve that is activated when the drive is shifted in and out of gear. The only valve you will find is a check valve that will close on the bellhousing when you pull the drive and a check ball in the drive that seals the drive when you remove it.

Remember there is a difference between the advice you get from a paid professional in the marine service industry and your local boat owner.

What would happen if when you fill the outdrive with the drive in the down position until the oil flows out of the vent hole then put the plug in the vent hole and raise the outdrive ( is check valve now in the open position?) and keep pumpng oil will it then flow out the resovoir if the cap is off. Are you guys all telling me the same thing with a diferent approach.?

If the drive is installed on the bell housing the Check valve is always open. The only purpose of the check valve and check ball are to stop lube from leaking out when you pull the drive off.



Fill the drive until lube comes out the vent. Install the plug. Top off the reservoir and take it for a ride, After the air has purged to the reservoir top it off again.

If you keep pumping gear oil into the drive to fill the reservoir, I guarantee you will over fill it and make a mess.
