"Hi gang....am no authority on Merc. sterndrives, so was wondering if someone could anwer a question for me please. Bravo 3 d/p has been cooking uj bellows and gearcable rubbers/linkage (stuck in forad.......hello pontoon!). The exhaust bellows is different and not connected bell side, more like a rubber shroud that would loosly fit if leg were trimmed down onto bellhousing end. Is this right please? does it not just spew gasses over rest of bellows, esp. in neutral? many thanks all."

"hmmmm....silence....well, researched the whole thing and found the alternative "high performance" tube was the part in question. Not too sure why its HP, other than smoother flow poss, but any comments on the bad rear sealing (does mention dirty transoms)?,vaccuum scavenging loss, causing less gasses out of lower prop exit? and possibility of gasses leaking causing overheating of gear cable and uj bellows (7.3 diesel providing exhaust). Any poss. of driveheat causing this phenomenem (no shower). Any one had this prob. before? many thanks."

"If I recall correctly (a first?) that HP tube
was installed on the bravos to prevent the
higher exhaust volumes on larger engines from
"blowing up" (like a balloon) the original exhaust bellows, and forcing the bellows into
the U-joint bellows. Causing the u-joint bellows
to contact the u-joint and wear through. When the
drive is down most of the wxhaust goes through the prop, when trimmed up some goes out between
the transom plate and the drive. Especially true
on the 7.3 Diesel. Don;t know if there is anything to do other than thru-transom exhaust.
Expensive and much noisier. Probably not drive
temp causing your problem - that should pretty much be limited to the drive internally. But a shower directed to the area could help certainly worth a try."

"Thanks Henry for that.....forgot to say that oil topup res. drains every trip too, so thinking of foaming and hot pressurised oil crying freedom too, funny some say res. overflows due to heat and some say it drains, good or bad seals possibly? Shower and poss. thrutrans exhaust look likely eh!"
