The 4 horse is a 1977 model and the 4.5 is a 1979.

The 4 horse should be a twin cylinder with Merc's Thunderbolt 4 ignition. The 4.5, although a (newer) model should be a single cylinder with the earlier Thunderbolt 2, so it will have points. All in all, the 4 horse will be the much nicer motor of the pair..."
