Hi All.
I'm new to all this, but am getting mixed advise.
I bought flipper 570 recently (from the 80's) with a 2 stroke johnson 55HP. I live in Sweden, and from were I bought it it was closer to the sea so the previous guy had used a copper based bottom paint.
Now were I am the boat lives (summer only) in freshwater (in Uppsala for those who know where that is in Sweden).
I was about to top up the bottom paint (the previous owner gave me some that he'd been using), but the local boat shop told me copper is illegal here (and bad for the environment).
Then, a neighbour of mine told me that in these freshwater parts its really unnecessary to use bottom paint at all. I've seen similar reviews online in forums that say in freshwater areas for a boat like this it's not really necessary and most slime comes off with a quick pressure wash if you do it soon after taking the boat out after summer.
My preference would be to skip the bottom paint entirely here. So two questions...
1) Do you agree? Is bottom paint required at all?
2) I would like to remove the copper paint eventually (since technically its illegal in these waters). How do I go about that and how can I then reapply something (paint?) so it doesnt look like crap as no doubt i'll need to sand it a bit (not that you'll see that when in the water.. but still would bug me!).
Thanks ahead.
Jason
