"Hello there. Took my Volvo AQ131B on the water this morning and after throttling forward the engine started to bog down and died on me. I could not restart it.

I looked under the cap and found metal shavings and after I got home I noticed a spring snapped inside the distributor.

Any suggestions on a new replacement? I would prefer to have new over rebuilt but you guys are the pros.... thoughts???

And for the larger question (sorry for my ignorance), if a spring snapped, would that cause my engine to die like that?"

"Marc,

A new distributor costs over $1300. Do you want to go there?

To the best of my knowledge Volvo does not sell the springs, though they can probably be obtained through Bosch. The best thing you could do with your distributor is take it to a shop where they can rebuild it and also test the centrifugal advance to verify the curve is as per specifications.

You can also try to get a used distributor at eBay."

Does anyone have feedback on the Hot-spark distributor kits that are out there? I found on hot-spark.com there is a distributor conversion kit for 109.00 and another for 139.00.

Wondering if that will hold me over while i have this original one rebuilt.

"None of the two distributors

"None of the two distributors will work in your Volvo Penta engine. However, they will likely work on your Volkswagen or Porsche car engine. "
