"Hey Learned People, long time no post.

Firstly I hope everyone has a happy and safe 2010.

Now the problem, I have a friend who has just purchased an old Sea Ray which is shaft driven and is using Borg Warner Velvet Drives, Model Number 1017006. I hope that someone may be able to give me some advice on them because as a repairer I have to admit I have never had one apart or know much about them.

One of the drives has emulsified oil in it, they are water cooled so I am asuming that we have a coolant leak somewhere within the drive.
Question 1, Do they have a common problem with their water cooling system and if so is it an easy fix.
Question 2, Are they an easy box to rebuild or do I need a vast aray of special tools to carry out a rebuild.
Question 3, Is the water cooling an option or a standard feature and is it totaly necesary on a boat that runs for no more than generally an hour at a time and below 2500 rpm.

If anyone has any tips I would be extreamly gratefull.

"I know very little, but can tell you water doesn't go through them, they have a heat exchanger like one used for power steering systems and others. Cooling I'd say is necessary as oil is being compressed it needs to dispense the heat somehow.

I havent looked at the boxes yet to see how they are set up. So far I have only just recieved a call from my friend describing the condition.

So if the fluid lines my friend describes that go from the boxes to the engine carry oil through the heat exchangers on the fresh water cooling, maybe we have a corosion issue inside one of the heat exchangers.

If so that is easy enough to prove, Looks like I had better go and have a look for myself.

"no magic in there Peter.takes a bit of time to set up properly, but not all that difficult. no special tools needed. a 45 degree feeler guage comes in handy when shimming. bigest problem water will cause is rusted bearings. they are pricey, so get it out of there. Brian is correct. no water goes thru the gear. just a heat exchanger/oil cooler. needs it though. a short run without cooling will fry the clutches. I have manuals. e-mail if you need anything specific. S."

For all my years of fiddling around with this stuff I have never had anything to do with the velvet drives.

I went and had a look at the boat the other day and pressure tested the system and there is no sign of a leak anywhere so at this stage we are assuming that the boat has had a bilge full of fresh water and it has got into the boxes through the breather.

At this stage we have flushed the boxes and everything seems OK and the oil is remaining clean but we will probably pull them out and reco them next winter.
I have since also downloaded a manual and had a browse through it and it all looks pretty simple to me.

Yeh, once I had a look at the setup it is pretty self explanetry.
I have dissconected the oil lines and blanked off one end and then pressure tested the system for over 1/2 an hour with no noticable movement in the pressure gauge so the integrity of the cooler looks good.

Peter have you used Macs corro

Peter have you used Macs corrorion inhibitor in your cooling system? It is a NZ
product. I will do a seperate post on the product.
