bogging down

Hi! I have an 8hp 2 stroke Johnson which is a great little outboard as a whole but sometimes it bogs down and nearly cuts out when opening the throttle. What could be the likely cause for this and what can I do to prevent this from happening? I don't feel comfortable going too far especially when out at see in fear of completely cutting out and not being able to fire it up again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this an 84 or 2004 model ?---I cannot see , feel or hear your motor.----So report the actual compression values.-----Did motor sit with fuel in carburetor for years ?-----Fuel tank , hose and fittings may have a leak.
