"Ok I know this is pretty much motor discussion but I have a question concerning my Sea Ray hull. I was givin a 1973 mustard yellow color Sea Ray to try and fix up. Been working on the motor and making progress, and I was told to get the shine back, all I have to do is Rubbing Compound and a buffer.? I assumed it would have to be re-painted, but if buffing works thats even better. Any advice or input would be helpfull. The color is mustard yellow and is faded pretty bad due to weather. Thanks again"

You will be able to get a shine on her again with a good buff but you will not be able to make a great deal of difference to the fade.

What you may be able to try is one of the tinted automotive polishes that are on the market.

Yellows and Reds are about the worst of colours when it comes to fade but you should be able to use one of the yellow tinted polishes to regain some of the boats original apearence.

"If the gelcoat has a coarse texture to it, you'll need to wet sand the entire hull with different grit papers to restore the gelcoat. It is a tedious process but will nearly bring back the original shine. All sanding should be done in a gentle back and forth manner, not circular. Use a rubber sanding pad and lots of water, changing paper often. Begin on the worst area using a 200 grit paper until it feels smooth then change to 400 grit and next to 800 grit and finally 1000 grit. You will be left with a smooth, dull finish with fine scratches in it.

Now buff, changing to clean pads often, with a 3M brand marine finish restorer medium cut rubbing compound and move to a fine cut compound and then finish with a mixture of a soft paste wax and mix in cooking starch to form a creamy polishing/wax finishing compound. YES, COOKING STARCH. A finish coat of soft carnuaba base wax will make it sliiiiick! Been there and done that!"

Yes it does; still have to sand it smooth for a good paint finish. You also loose the gelcoat and bumps and rub marks remove the paint. Hmmm!

"Thanks guys, I really appreciate the input, and the hull doesnt appear to be rough anywere, its actually pretty smooth and in great shape other than the serious fading. I beleive I'll try the buffing with compound and although I never heard of using Cooking Starch I will definately try it. Give me a little while and I will definately let ya'll know how it goes. Again I really appreciate the help. Thanks"
