"I have a 1988 Bayliner with a 5.7L just had the engine overhauled, the problem I am having now is when I shifted to reverse it sounds like it is not in gear and and it barely moves and the boat and the engine sounds like its going to die, when I shifted back to neutral it just completely kills the engine..."

If you want to work on it yourself...read as much as you can ... especially the part "Adjusting your Cobra Shift Linkage" -get a factory manual and heed the many warnings about running a cobra in the condition yours is in.... lower shift cable needs to be understood very well on that drive
