"coming back from trip had boat @ w.o.t. then suddenly went into netral. checked the cable from controls to engine also cable from engine to outdrive, found nothing. shifted cable manually got no response from the outdrive in fwd. or rev. cables are brand new. outdrive is also. ive taken the boat out before many of times this is a first. drained the oil from the unit. checked the two gears at the top found found no internal damage...also checked the T shift handle it seems to be fine i shifted with my hand but its like the unit will not 'lock into' either gear..any ideas. thanxx"

broken dive shaft in the lower

broken dive shaft in the lower unit most likely.
Could supply more accurate info if we knew what engine and drive you are talking about.

"If you run it on muffs, does

"If you run it on muffs, does it pump water through the cooling system?
If so, the vertical shaft is turning, and the trouble is in your lower unit or your prop coupler.
If not, it is likely your engine coupler or your vertical shaft has failed just below the upper gear housing.
Does it make any sound when you try to shift?

sorry for the return emails it

sorry for the return emails it was through my phone. the outdrive made no sounds such as grinding or chattering. water still pumps through the impeller because i installed the tru hull exhuast. a mechanic said it might be the dawg gear. but with that i believe it would slip @ first then eventually go out. the coupler to the engine is brand new. the outdrive is a aplha 1 gen 1. w/ the engine a gm 5.7 mercruiser.

It sounds like your trouble is

It sounds like your trouble is in the lower gear unit.
You need to remove the drive and check further.
Before I would spend a lot of money repairing it maybe take a look at an SEI lower. I bought one this last spring for $795 plus shipping. They work well and will bolt right onto your Merc upper.

"The only way to see what is w

"The only way to see what is wrong is to dissassemble it, which requires special tools, or at least a special wrench to get the propshaft bearing retainer nut loose.

When the lower unit is off you can turn the lower shift shaft to put the drive into forward gear (straight ahead; 12 o'clock), then turn the upper drive shaft CW and see if the prop shaft turns.

You can also turn the shift shaft to about 10 o'clock and check reverse the same way.

If you get both gears to solidly engage, then there is no problem with your lower unit. Based on what you have told us so far though, it sure sounds like your lower unit is toast.

"hey rod thanks for the 411. w

"hey rod thanks for the 411. with the outdrive still together i did check the fwd. and rev. gears and turned the prop. both ways the prop locked up. i aslo took the cable from the engine to the outdrive off to see if i could pull the cable out of the casing but got nothing. while i was pulling on the shift cable the actual shifter under or on the outdrive was moving back and fourh but not actually staying in either gear to where i couldnt spin the prop...im stumped ive been through this system before when i replaced everything about 5 months ago everything was working fine,,then nothing.."

Did you recently replace the w

Did you recently replace the water pump??????
you may be missing a SS washer that goes on the splined shaft in the lower. without it the shoe drops down out of engaugement.
