" PLEASE HELP
I BOUGHT A EVINRUDE 75 H.P.MODEL# 75643 I THINK THE YEAR MODEL IS A 1976. BUT I AM NOT FOR SURE ON THIS.
THE BOAT AND MOTOR HAD BEEN SUNK COMPLETY UNDER WATER. THE MAN I BOUGHT IT FROM SAID HE HAD A BOAT SHOP CRANK THE ENGINE AFTER IT WAS RECOVERED FROM THE LAKE AND RUN FOR JUST A SHORT TIME ON THE BACK OF THE BOAT.( THE BOAT HAS NOT BEEN IN THE WATER SENSE IT SUNK.
I BOUGHT THE BOAT AND ENGINE AND HAVE NOT HEARD IT RUN YET.THE OWNER SAID THAT THE BOAT SHOP MECHANIC SAID THE STARTER WAS NO GOOD AFTER THE SINKING AND HE HAD TO CRANK IT BY HAND ROPE.
WELL I DONT KNOW IF THE MAN IS TELLING ME THE TRUTH OR NOT AND I WANT TO DO ALL THE BEST THINGS FOR THE ENGINE AND SEE IF I CAN GET SOME USE OUT OF IT.IT IS NOT LOCKED UP AND THE COMPRESSION FEELS STRONG AT THIS TIME. I HAVE NOT RUN A COMPRESSION CHECK YET!!
I HAVE DONE AUTOMOBILE MECHANIC WORK FOR YEARS, BUT KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT OUTBOARDS ENGINES.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TO DO BEFORE I EVEN TRY TO CRANK THE ENGINE. I DONT WANT TO CREATE ANY MORE PROBLEMS THAN WHAT THEY MIGHT BE NOW.
HOW LONG IT WAS UNDER WATER? I DONT KNOW.
THE OWNER SAID THAT IT WAS LAST CRANKED LAST SEPTEMBER 2003
PLEASE HELP IN ANYWAY YOU CAN!!!
THANKING EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU FOR YOUR PROMPT REPLY!!!

"Glenn.... It doesn't matt

"Glenn.... It doesn't matter if the engine was underwater for 30 seconds or two weeks, it's as soaked as it's going to be.

What does matter is the difference, the effect of fresh water or salt water! And more importantly what matters is how long the engine was out of the water before any work and restoration efforts was undertaken. The engine starts to rust and deteriorate the instant it's removed from the water.

If the engine was worked on properly, immediately when removed from the water, and by a certified mechanic, various procedures would have been undertaken, one being that the electric starter would have been completely dismantled and repaired as needed.... obviously this was not done which would make one wonder just what else wasn't done.

If you're friendly with any knowledgeable outboard mechanic, I'd suggest that you obtain his advice. I don't want to run anyone down but quite frankly, if it were me, I'd be hesitant to put any money into that engine.

NOTE... Typing in CAPS is considered SHOUTING and is difficult to read.
