Blown OMC Rectifier/Regulator 1992 115 hp V4 X-flow

Engine:92 115 V4 X-flow

Hi there.

Over the winter, my boat had a live power line fall on it.

Judging from my fried wiring and blown gauges, it looks like the power may have arced through the trailer and boat and parts of the electrical system.

My voltage regulator/rectifier (part number 0584204) has a large split in the middle of the protective rubber that fills the cavity where the electronics are. Essentially it looks like the electronics exploded and cracked open the rubber:eek:.

What I am wondering is... has anyone seen this kind of failure mode from more 'normal' engine malfunctions or am I safe to assume that the regulator has failed due to arcing from the power lines. Should I just replace it and run or should I be checking other things before lighting 'er up again.

I am fairly sure that I have the ignition wiring repaired correctly. Currently, I just have the bare essentials hooked up to crank and run the motor, with no gauges, lights or other accessories. ie. just the keyswitch is hooked up. I have run the motor with the regulator split open (before I noticed the split), and it runs fine. What led me to notice the regulator split was I was testing the tachometer and noticed erratic voltage readings from the tach lead with a voltage meter while the engine was running.

Hopefully my ramblings make sense to one of you outboard gods out there:).

Thanks for reading and for any help you can offer.

Chris

Before changing, you should at least checking through the system for short circuits.
If changing and a short, you run the risk of burning it out (again). I have seen regulators burned, blown up etc before, mainly due to shortenings.
Be sure to test alarm systems including the VRO before going boating.
