I was out about a month ago and five minutes into the trip motor starts clacking. I stopped it to check for problems. When I restarted it it was a pain to start and it had trouble idling. I got back to the ramp and there was water in the oil. The engine is a 76 aq 130 c on a 27 or 280 outdrive. I am sure the engine is shot so I would like to know if there are any newer blocks that may attach to that outdrive. also if not who is a reputible longblock dealer for that engine. Thanks in advance

"I think you should first veri

"I think you should first verify that your engine is toasted prior to disposing it. The water in the oil couold be due as something as simple as a blown head gasket.

Regarding "new" blocks, and if you were happy with the performance of your current raw water cooled engine (that is, until it stopped

), I suggest you try an autowrecker specialized in Volvo and look for a B20 engine. If you find one, you can marinize it by just transplanting all the marine parts in your current engine.

Alternatively, you can look for a complete fresh water cooled overhead cam Volvo Penta engine (AQ120, AQ125, AQ131, AQ140, AQ145 or AQ151). They are quieter than your current engine, and they bolt in your current bellhousing."

That doesnt explain the clacki

That doesnt explain the clacking sound. Could something have broken in the block that would cause that or could the clacking have been combustion leaking through the head gasket. How much would I be looking to spend to get everything for the ohc swap. Carbs/ maifolds ect?

"The clacking sound could be a

"The clacking sound could be a number of things, including the sound of valves when a cylinder or two are not firing, valve tappets out of adjustment, a cracked piston, etc. Again, I would start for the basics and remove the head to have a look at the gasket. But first, make sure you run a compression test, wich will give you an idea of where you may have a problem.

If you get an OHC engine, it must be complete with all attachments, as virtually nothing from your AQ130 will fit there, except for the bellhousing and perhaps the alternator. However, if you find a B20 block from an autowrecker (or a replacement AQ130), that's a different matter. Volvo Penta OHC engines are listed every now and then at eBay, and the price varies from a few hundred bucks to over $1000.

"My head gasket just went last

"My head gasket just went last fall on my 75 AQ130C and there was no clacking. When I changed out the head gasket, I noticed that the valve had cracked. When the head gasket went, it might have got cold water on a valve and the valve broke. It is pretty easy to take the head off to check. Took all of maybe an hour. I would bet if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, removing the head will show what the issue is."
