blown condenser- burnt out cols

Hi all

I am getting so frustrated with my mechanic and my boat.

after lots of mishaps since buying my 1983 bayliner victoria in may - the one good thing that always held true was thevolvo penta enine - 4 cylinder.

was running great until we asked for a tune up ( the boat was out of the wter for 18months when we bought it).

since the tune up the coil is heating up - blowing the condenser. it coughs and splutters and there is no power.

mechanic has looked at it for 3 hours and came up with the suggestion that we left the key in the ignition...??? we had the key in our pocket 50 miles away at the time.

please please give me some direction, i dont want to hear the engine now needs replaced as we just changed the outdrive and the prop and the throttle cable and housing..... when we test rode he boat it flew propr to purchase !!!!!!!!!

any ideas?

Jean,

I just had a similar issue. Not sure if it is applicable to your engine, but the wiring to my coil was incorrect, sending a full 12 volts resulting in an over heating coil and a constantly burning out the condensor. Ensure that your wiring is correct, and that your coil is getting approximately 9 volts via a resistor...

thank youso much that makes so much sense. wonder if the mechanic will listen to me!

I will try that, anything to get my boat back out there for the long weekend. only so much fun on a boat in a covered slip!

hi folks, update:- engine is 280 outdrive 8 cylinder not four as prevously said. the mechanic said he has changed the wiring - said we had left the key in the ignition..... which I hadnt as i didnt have it last time at boat.

said it must to the switch - whatever switch that is..... will work on it next week after the long weekend..

any idea what this switch is?
