"It's been a while since I've bled the power tilt on my '74 Evinrude, and it sure needs it - what's the procedure again?

It sure needs it? What kind of problem are you having Mark? Those units are self bleeding.

"actually, I think I meant replacing the fluid, rather than bleeding out the air. I've had water in it a few years ago that caused similar problems (it works, just sluggish/jerky). It worked a treat to replace the fluid last time, I just can't remember how to do it right...

"To my experience the best way was to tilt the unit fully up and support the lower unit. That way You get all oil under the cylinder pistons. Then completely remove the release valve and slowly lover the unit manually. This will if done correctly push out the highest volume of oil. Then manually lift up the unit again and support it. Put back the valve, but leave it one turn open. Fill as much as possible in the reservoir and run the pump to bleed out air. Tighten the valve, fill and run pump until unit 'lifts' from support. Lower and raise a couple of times and check/refill oil."
