"I got some great advise on how to properly adjust the new cables, but for some reason the throttle cable will not move the throttle arm. When its disconnected the arm moves with the spring tension, and the throttle cable moves easily. But put them together and the lever will only move slightly. Any ideas. Thanks Tom"

when shifting with a remote the drive cable moves then the carb cable. There isn't a chance you are working on the wrong one or expecting it to move sooner then it should?

"I first thought I had the cables switched, but after going over it several times, they are right. The shift slider was rough, but some lube helped. I don't know if its normal, but it will shift out of reverse without constant tension on the slider. Forward drops in nice, reverse is hard. As for the control with the shift cable attached it feels good. It will stay in forward and reverse, When I add the throttle cable it gets super hard. Its adjusted properly, its almost like that half moon spring adds too much tension. Its frustrating, everything is new aside from the motor. Mercury marine told me the parts to buy to fit this older motor, maybe the control is wrong. Tom"

"wish I could help, its hard to picture from here. Don't shift into reverse without the engine running, the gears don't line up and it streaches the cable."

"I think I figured it out. The guy that had this boat before me did nothing to maintain it. On further inspection I found two small bolts that hold a plate down on the upper portion of the distributor assy. They were rubbing on the stationary piece above them. Also it appears as if the lube points on the distrubutor assy have never been touched. Do you know if it takes a special grease or fitting to do the job, if not i'll just use my bearing lube. Tom"

"Tom, That brass plate is use

"Tom, That brass plate is used to synchronize the idle spark advance (4-6 degrees BTDC) to the carbs (just starting to open). Make sure you do not loosen the bolts and change the position of the plate, without doing the link and sync adjustments."

"I made sure not to move the plate. The bolts were threaded into the holes, so the plate remained in its position. On another issue. When the motor sits for several days in the up position, it takes fuel added to the cyliners to get it to fire. I can pump fuel into the carbs, but it seems like it takes running to get the fuel to flow. Without added fuel to the cylinders, it will crank and not fire forever. Tom"

"Tom, You really need to choke the daylights out of those old inlines, whne cold starting. it also helps if the starter spins really fast, and the motor is trimmed all the way down."
