bigfoot lower unit

mechanic changed waterpump. I was in a hurry and did not check it before he left. hard to shift into forward but too easy to shift into reverse. Have some experience w/outboards, pulled lower unit. prop clicks when turned thought had found nuetral when it did not click anymore but when put back on boat and shifted it stayed in neutral. l its a 2006 50 bigfoot how do u know when its ready to put back on thanks
