big block won't crank

i got a lot of good answers yesterday from chiefalen, boat_tech, woodieman and bulit7, thanks. i pulled the plugs last night (snowstorm and all) and sure enough they were full of water. i cranked it until the water quit squirting out of the plug holes, added spray lube, and cranked it a little more, trying to slow the rusting process. when the incident first happened i checked the oil and it seemed fine. last night it seems overfull, no milky white but i suppose overfull means there's water down there. remembering that it all seemed to start with the overheating it may be caused by a broken block, broken head, broken head gasket, or getting in through the exhaust somehow. too many choices for my budget!! would it be reasonable to assume that a good compression test would eliminate the block, head and gasket? if it came in through the exhaust, would it be the bellows? and the real question... can a back yard mechanic R&R the heads (do they need to be magnafluxed) and replace the bellows, y pipe and exhaust shutters.

thanks again

If indeed your engine had overheated in the recent past or since problems have arisen it is possible to say this much anyway: Do your compression test first to rule out head gasket, cracked head and or block being cracked.(or worse) Also, it may simply be that when your engine overheated (maybe raw water pump failure) had caused engine to overheat and may have melted exaust shutter on the bank that now has water intrusion in cylinders. However, if this were the case you would think that both exaust shutters would be toast resulting in water being in both banks of engine. You could also have other issues with risers being rotted out and introducing raw water into cylinders. Could be alot of things but you need to eliminate one thing at a time before you jump the gun. best of luck, Tom

thanks for your answer marine! fact is there was water in both sides of the engine but much more on the starboard side. i don't really understand how water would pass from the exhaust to the cylinders but its starting to look like this will be my attack.
