BFP60 buzzer and misfiring.

I have a troubling BFP60. I went down to the boat today to start the engine for the first time in several months. After checking the oil and priming the bulb, I switched on the key and the buzzer sounded continuously. I tried to start anyway but it seemed not to fire. I removed the cover and tried again. Still no go. I switched the key on again and just left it. A few seconds later the pump switched on, the buzzer went off and beeped twice. I hit the started and it started right up.

After idling for maybe 5 minutes, the Garmin gauge showed 167 degrees. The buzzer started sounding once per second and the engine started to miss. I shut it down and started it back up. It runs fine for maybe 10 seconds then does this again. Can anyone steer me to the next troubleshooting step? THANKS!

What warning lights are on? What warning lights are off?

Without the second part of your issue, the first thing that comes to mind is the battery is low or bad....or bad connections. (Solid alarm and everything happens on a delayed basis) So, that is a good place to start. Make sure the battery is fully charged and tests good.

What does your Garmin usually read? Most of the time, they read a little high. Thermostat is supposed to be fully open at 158 deg F.
Where you in the water or running on a hose?
Was water coming out the telltail?

The second part of your problem...buzzer sounding once per second could indicate a sensor bad or out of range or could also indicate a problem with the charging system.
Again....the warning lights should give some direction to the problem.

So I went back to the boat again and found that when running and beeping, the MIL lamp is on and the green indicator is on. After it ran for a short while, I shut it down and jumpered for the codes. I got a 14 for the IAC. I tested it per the SELOC and it was fine. Using the kill switch, I cleared the code. It started back up without issue but stopped again, this time with a solid continuous tone, MIL lamp on and the green light faintly flickering. Jumpering again yields no codes.

I went back for a third time today and went through all the steps to find a no-code issue and made it all the way to "replace the ECM" step. Needless to say, I don't want to do this without being sure that's the problem.

I checked the voltage all the way to the fuses - a good 13.2 volts as the battery charger is connected. Starter spins fast. Visual inspection of the battery connections is good.

The solid alarm indicates either an overheat or an oil pressure issue. Since the red light is not on....no overheat.

The blinking oil pressure light indicates that there is something wrong with the oil pressure switch or its associated wiring.

Take it out and clean it with brake clean. There is a very small pin hole in it, that can sometimes get clogged. It could also be that the switch is bad/intermittant.

Also, make sure you are using the proper 10w30 oil (mineral based) and the correct Honda oil filter.

I am not sure why the mil was lit, but it may be possible that it is related to the oil pressure switch.

Back at the boat now. Tested continuity good rom the connector on the oil pressure switch to ground. Reconnected the switch and tested good continuity to ground through to the appropriate pin on the ecu connector. Disconnected the oil pressure switch and tested again at the ecu connector to ensure no short to ground.

I'm at a loss. The motor has 19.2 hours on it as indicated by the Garmin that's connected. Needless to say, I've been very disappointed in Honda throughout my ownership of this engine.

A couple more questions....

Did you remove the oil pressure switch and clean it?

Did you make sure that the hole that it goes in is clear of debris?

How old is this motor? You said that it has very low hours.

If you are in the USA, the motor has a 5 year warranty. Why not just take it in to a dealer? If it is a faulty ECU or sensor, it would be covered under warranty.

Since the switch showed a short to ground as it should without pressure so I didn't remove it. I had no replacement O ring or light duty threadlocker to reinstall it properly. I'll see if I can get them locally tomorrow.

I took delivery of the motor 5 years ago in May so I'm out of warranty by about 3 weeks. Go figure. The dealer tells me they need to put the computer on it to know what the cause is. They are backed up at least three weeks. Unfortunately, the bottom paint on the boat is not to be left out of the water for more than 48 hours or it needs to be recoated.
