Not sure what year this engine

Not sure what year this engine is. Does it matter? I see there are several water pump kits out there. Any help in getting the right one is greatly appreciated. The engine is a long shaft with the extension for a sailboat. It is currently on a sailboat.

I am used to doing this job on the older OMC's (done it a bunch). Is it any different on the Honda? The parts look very similar. Is there anything I need to know that is specific to removing this particular lower unit?

"Thanks for the help! Those do

"Thanks for the help! Those documents made all the difference. Whole job only took about 30 minutes. Including removing all the mussel's from inside the lower unit.

Regards,

AJ"

Got the new water pump in.

Got the new water pump in.

We went to run the engine and no water is coming out?

Should water be coming out the pee hole immediately after starting the engine? Or does the thermostat have to open first?

We waited about 2 minutes and nothing? Did not want to overheat the engine.

"1. Is thermostat frozen shut?

"1. Is thermostat frozen shut?

2. Was removed impeller in pieces or whole? If old and fragmented, parts may have gone up and plugged pee tube. If so, must remove lower end again, remove thermostat on top end and shoot pieces down and out.

3. If impeller intact, try running 300 lb leader line up pee hole to clear passage way. You probably did this first.

4. If that doesn't work, put leg in water barrel and see if it pees. That's my problem now. I can get BF50A to pee only when in water tank and not with garden hose.

I'm hoping one of the experienced readers out there can provide a solution for both of us."

"Sometimes it may be possible

"Sometimes it may be possible to install the impeller backwards.....Maybe check this.
If installed ok, then there might be a side cover that once removed may show some salty, cruddy build up. The pee tell-tale should flow almost immediately.

West Marine has a useful 'Salt Remover' spray bottle to help in cleaning up any build up.

Some folks swear that impellers should be routinely replaced every 100 hours of operation"

you can not install the impell

you can not install the impeller backward

it could be slipping if the key was not lined up

Honda 9.9 that AJ is talking about herein above is my motor and is Finally pumping water. Not certain which fix did it, "water ears" were in question, so put the foot in 5 gallon buck of water, still not pumping water, did not work, then removed the flush plug in lower unit, water began to drip out the pee hole, then removed the pee hole hose from engine, water shot out with huge pressure at least 6 ft long horizontal stream. Discovering the pee tube was blocked with sand, probably from the sand bar I was trying to motor off of just before this water pump problem. Notable: I had removed the pee tube from engine several times with no results until the flush plug was removed. Reamed out the pee tube with a drill bit by hand, to remove sand, now strong stream of water from pee hole, back to normal. So, sounds like an air lock was blocking water supply to the pump, relieved by removing the flus plug for a just a moment, when plug was tightened high pressure water started. Now a new issue:
In the process, disconnected the Longer top shifter rod nut from attachment to the shifter rod inside casing above the access to shifter adjustment nuts. Any ideas how to re-connect the the longer nut without taking the whole long shaft unit apart? Thank you so much for the help
