BF90 will not go into reverse while in the water

i find this a little bizarre as I have adjusted my linkages and tested the forward /reverse with the Muffs on. The reverse will engage while out of the water. I launch the boat and twice now it will not go into reverse gear (Forward works). Just grinds a bit as they do before they go in gear....so close?? The lever is forced as far as it can go on the reverse side. Its a 1999. I did replace both cables when I bought the engine and unsure about the past history?

It may just need adjustment at the engine.

Disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever on the engine. Operate the shift lever by hand with the engine running and in the water (it may take some effort). If it shifts ok, then it may be a cable adjustment.....
It could also be slop in the shift linkage or your shifter. If it does not shift ok, then you may have an issue in the gear case.

The shift needs to be set with the roller from part #4 (detent) in the notch of the shift arm (part #7). http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard%20Engine/2005/BF90A5%20LRTA%20/SHIFT%20SHAFT/parts.html The picture may be hard to follow, but is located in the center front of the engine. That is neutral. Whenever you go from in gear to neutral, that detent needs to come at rest right in the center of the notch.

You may have to play with it to get it correct.

One other thing is to check to be sure the throttle cable is connected properly. It is not and it is under tension, then the shifter may not operate the way it should. If is doubt, disconnect it also at the motor, when doing you shift testing.

Thanks Mike...again
That's what I was thinking on trying. Removing the shift linkage and giving it a go. So today with that in mind.. It gos into reverse all day long??
Interesting about the throttle cable. If it does it again, that will be a simple test. Thanks for this info
