So I bought my first boat at a steal of a price off craigslist and was told it needed a water pump to have it running tip top. You could fire it up with the ear muffs on and it would have a weak stream, so I took it apart and the housing and plate under the impeller were pretty worn. I ordered a new impeller, housing, plate and gaskets for it, found out the motor was a 97 and i have no idea the hours. Put on all the new parts and changed the oil and fuel filter along with putting fresh gas in because apparently it had been sitting quite a while. The new pump worked great with the ear muffs and so we put it on the water for a shakedown and it was doing fine. Motor ran strong, got on plane fast and everything, then we're going to a shallow area where we're about to turn around to get out and it feels like we hit something. The boat jerked and the motor shut off. Got it restarted and knew immediately something was not right, now there is no water coming out of the pee hole so we raise it up to check and its free of debris or anything. There was no warning lights or alarms, of course i have no way of knowing if they worked to begin with, I had to rewire the whole switch panel due to corrosion. We nurse the boat back to the dock and the whole way it just ran poorly and made noise.
I get it home and take the water pump back off and the vanes were facing the wrong way from when I installed it, ran hose pressure up where the water pump outlet would go and it shoots strong out the tell tale. Ran it again with the ear muffs on and nothing comes out at all. Started the motor for a few seconds without the lower unit on and it still makes the knocking sound in the top of the motor. I cant figure out why its not pushing water, the pump looks ok and the output is not clogged. One thing i noticed after reading on this forum, the later models have a honda lower unit with square plastic mesh for the water intake and this motor is 97 model, is it possible someone put a later model lower unit on it? Do these motors really develop a rod knock or something crazy that fast? I'm not the type to take things to have someone else work on them but now i'm a little scared of it.
We weren't out there for more than few hours and I really hope I didn't just ruin my good deal and have to replace a motor. The motor was making the whole deal worthwhile, the hull and trailer were not in the best shape.
Any help is greatly welcomed, I'm pulling my hair out right now.
