BF9.9A BABS-1400514 water leak

Hey everyone. I just bought my first boat, a 3.8m tinny with a 9.9hp Honda motor.

Unfortunately I didn't notice the leak when I was inspecting, but have noticed it at home.

You can see where I've circled they've tried to hide it with some silicone.

I believe it could be part 36 or 57 from the below link:

Does anyone else have any thoughts? It's difficult to see the leak because of where it is, so I'm just deducing from where they've siliconed.

I still get plenty of water coming from the wee hole. Would it be dangerous to use the motor with this leak?

Any other thoughts on what/where the leak could be? I haven't tried stripping the motor yet to take a closer look - I'm not sure how far I'll get whilst still being able to check for the leak. For what it's worth, I'm reasonably mechanically handy (have rebuild cv's, timing chains, two stroke motorbike motors etc) but this is my first foray into the boating world.

That would most likely be a yes on the water seal, the parts you mentioned. I would also look at Part 8 and its seals to ensure they are not leaking as well.

Any idea what the name of that black section is called in my original photo? Is that the exhaust?

I managed to find a service manual, and I think I've circled the right section (from the photo) - if I have I'm assuming in there is where I will find parts 36,57,8 or am I going off the rails here?

All parts and schematics can be found at www.boats.net. Do you know the year? I did some searching and can find BABS in Pre-1997, just want to make sure I am looking at the right thing.

Thanks mate. I believe it's a 1999. I think I found the part under the oil pump section, appears to be a seal around the exhaust. I believe the part number is 19252-ZV4-003. Would you concur with this?

Assuming it is the part, would I need to remove the motor for this or do you think it can be accessed from the middle section?

If it's a motor out job, how long do you think it would take an ameteur? I've rebuilt car cvs, timing, removed gearboxes etc. But never worked on a boat motor.

That look like it. Your pictures show they threw silicone at the top as if the gasket part 17 was leaking https://www.boats.net/catalog/honda...-la-vin-babl-1400001-to-babl-1499999/oil-pump

Are you thinking it is the lower rubber gromet? If it is the gromet you may be able to get to it easier removing the lower unit and mid section.

If not from the looks of it to replace the gasket (part 17), it looks like you would have to remove the power head of the outboard to properly service it, hence the previous owner said screw it and put silicone on it since its water. However, if you are used to working on cars, small outboards are super easy. Removing the power head can seem intimidating, but it is essentially, disconnecting a few electrical connectors and fuel lines. After that there are the main mounting bolts you take out from the mid section, then lift up. While your in there, I would recommend inspecting the oil pump, pick up screen and replacing the pump for good measure.

Thanks mate really appreciate your input. I'm hoping it's not the exhaust pipe itself, as I don't believe there are replacement pipes available.

I am meant to be going on a trip this weekend in it. There is plenty of water coming out the pee hole, do you think it would be ok to use or is it too big if a gamble?

If it is not leaking horribly, you should be okay, but it really shouldn't take a long time to do, but you WILL NOT probably have parts by this weekend. The chance you run is the silicon failing and then causing a failure in the cooling system, overheat and shut the engine down. Being its on the exhaust it is further down the line so it has already cooled the engine and is being disguarded back into the water. I think you will be fine.

Surprised Chawkman or Hondadude haven't chimed in or Ian.
