BF9.9 Checking oil/reading dip stick

Ok:

I have a brand new (4hrs) BF9.9KOLHC. The manual reads with the motor level/horizontal, while checking the oil: pull dip stick out, wipe off with a clean rag and push the dip stick in all the way, pull out and the oil should be between the 2 marks (holes) on the stick. the motor has not been run for a week. I decided to check the oil today and find the oil level 3/4 of an inch above the full mark. Am I suppose to push the dip stick in all the way until it bottoms? The stick has the rubber sealing O rings incorporated in the dip stick top.

Thanks

Yes, you are supposed to push it all the way in.

It is possible that the dealer overfilled the oil. It is easy to do.

Drain out some of your oil until the oil is below the top mark. It is better to be a little below the top mark.

There could be other things causing high oil, but for now, let's assume that the dealer just got a little aggresive with the oil.

Check your oil after you use is another couple of hours. Let the motor sit for a while (a week) so the comparison is the same as before. That way the oil in the filter will have time to drain out and provide a comparible reading.

One other reason you could be "making oil" is you are idling a lot with the motor. The motor has not even been broken in completely yet.

Did the dealer do the first two hours breakin for you? Or did you do it yourself?
I hope they explained the breakin procedure.

Idling also does not allow the engine to get to proper operating temperature. The rings have not seated and the fuel can be going past the rings into your oil. Assuming the first two hours of break in have been done according to the owner's manual, you should be at the point where you should run it good, but only run at full throttle for 5 minutes at a time. If they have not, get your manual and start from the beginning of breakin.

If you smell fuel in your oil, you should change it with 10w30 as your manual says. The fuel will limit the lubricating properties of the oil and could harm the engine Then take it out and run it good.

Thanks Mike: I am one of those guys who reads the manuals and I always break my equipment in exactly as recommended by the manufacture. I followed the procedure as stated 15 min, 45 min, 60 min and now I am at the 4 hour mark heading for 8 hours and then the 10. I have not run the engine at full throttle past 3-4 min yet.
I will take her to the 5 min mark at full throttle. After I drain some oil) We have had some wind here lately and I can get her out, maybe tomorrow.

I will drain some oil as suggested, I was going to do that but I needed confirmation on the dip stick to make sure I did not miss something. I do not smell any fuel in the oil (I'm happy to say)

I really do not know if the dealer did the 2 hour break in so I just followed the instructions as if they did not.

At 53 years of age I have broke in 2 new motor bikes, 4 trucks, 3 cars, 3 lawn mowers, 1 Honda snow blower, 1 troy built tiller, A John Deere ride on, gas powered pressure washer, chain saw, and brush saw.
Oh and not to mention that Oil burning outboard I will never speak of again. Lololo

I will Reply in the next couple of days.
Thanks again Mike
