BF60 WOT rpm question

I just ran my new BF60 and at WOT it reached 5200 rpm. Is that too low for WOT? Does it sound like it needs a different prop? The boat is a Maritime Skiff 16. Thanks.

Yes it is too low. It should be around 6000 rpm.

The motor does not come with a prop from the factory. The dealer is supposed to provide the proper prop to get the proper operation with the boat.

If this was installed by a dealer....take it back and ask them to water test it and provide the correct prop for your boat. That is part of the PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) that the dealer is supposed to do.

It might just be that the tachometer is set incorrectly or you did not trim the motor up...once on plane.

Mike, since I was just motoring around following the break in protocol it is very possible that I did not have the motor trimmed properly. The throttle lever would not stay in place when I upped the rpm and since I was paying more attention to holding it steady than adjusting the trim it is very possible that it was less than ideal. Using a best guess as to the weight of the hull, the Honda prop calculator indicates that an 11x17 may be a better choice. I'll talk to the dealer tomorrow.

You should have received and signed a Pre Delivery Checklist when they delivered the motor to you. Many dealers do not do this. It is a form that has a checklist for the tech to go through when setting up the motor....as well as a check list for the dealer to make sure they go over everything with you about the engine. It should also have the size of the prop and the full throttle rpms that they got while water testing.

If the issue is just that you did not trim the motor, an 11 x17 will not give you more rpms. It will give you fewer rpms if everything else stays the same.

If the motor was trimmed properly and all else is good, the a lower pitch prop would be required. Like I said, the one you have may be the correct one.

As to the throttle not staying in place....if you have a shifter like this one that is top mounted on your console, there is a tension adjustment screw under the plastic cover. Once the cover is off, it is a flat head screwdriver adjustment on the side of the shifter facing you. There are a couple of other adjusting screws, with a locking nut on them.....leave those alone....they are not for tension.

That's the binnacle. I'm going to gave them adjust it since it is really their responsibility. Thanks for your help.

Although I have only been on the water once with the new motor, I am very interested in changing to a 4 blade prop because of the improvement in lift and fuel efficiency. How the heck do I determine what diameter/pitch prop to select? If the 11x15 3 blade prop is the correct one for this boat, then what diameter/pitch should I try for a 4 blade prop? Thanks for any assistance you can give me.
