BF50a Wiring Harness Re-Do

I need some help. I just purchased a 1999 Carolina Skiff with a 2001 Honda BF50a. Boat runs, pumps water, most accessories work, just needed to be cleaned up and reconfigured. A lot of steel drywall screws holding even more accessories. Wiring had been tapped into multiple times for radios, depth finders, and so on. Other then a lot of extra holes and a broken and missing windscreen, it looks a whole lot better.

Now my Honda question. The original control was a Mercury. Top mounted, seems to run the engine. Key switch is somewhat generic, kill switch is connected, and motor has a pretty good clump of electrical tape about a foot off of the engine, that I have not unwrapped.

I think that all of the four gauges are Telex, and probably original to the boat.

I would like to wire the boat to the correct Honda wiring harness and remote control. The boat came with a box of Honda parts, that seem to cross reference correctly to the BF50, however may or may not be correct for this model, a BF50a, serial number BAZS-321xxxx. I will list part numbers in a second. There is also a single top mount Honda remote with pigtail for trim, minus cables. All of these parts are new in the bags. Here is a list of the part numbers in the box. There is also two square switch plate covers that I assume go to the ignition switch and the kill switch.

Ignition Switch = 37552-ZW7-1A
Kill Switch = 36153-ZW7-000AH
Instrument HRNS, TELEFX = 32200-ZW7-000AH
20 Wire Main = 32205-ZY6-020AH
Remote Control = 06240-ZW5-U40
Round Alert Gauge = 40700-ZW7-000AH

The ignition switch and the kill switch seem to have matched plugs, the other two harnesses have different plugs.

This is a project boat for my 23 year old son, I want to get it right. Wiring doesn't worry me, I have all the correct equipment and connectors to splice. Plug and Go would be easier and might warrant buying addition parts if needed. I also have the Honda Service Manual and Wiring Diagram. It looks like all the wire is here, just the connectors are off. I am having a hard time finding out the right part numbers for this project. It appears that the dates on the parts are somewhat correct, 1992'ish, and too new for others - the ignition switch is 2012. I would like to get this back to all Honda. I have the wiring for the 12v accessories, but would like to have all of the parts needed when I start rewiring. IS it possible that there are some adapters from old to new, or is splicing an option using shrink wrap connectors and the proper crimping tools?

If there are any Honda experts out there, and I suspect that there are many, I sure could use your help and advice. No stranger to forums, most are fishing, hunting, farming, or shooting. All have been a great help in my hobbies, but with this one, I feel a little out there on an island.

Looks like you have almost all of what you need.

Do you have a harness with a warning horn on it? It normally came with the ignition switch, kill switch, and alert gauge. If not you will need a 36170-ZV7-110AH harness with warning horn, to bring it all together. http://marine.honda.com/outboards/accessories/key-switches Then you will find that the plugs and connectors match up.

If the shifter is still in the sealed box, it has all the hardware and connections required. You will need two 3300 control cables. The Pro-x cables that Honda sells are really good http://marine.honda.com/outboards/accessories/control-cables

The connectors on the engine end of the cables can be reused from the existing installation.

The clump of tape near the engine probably covers a connector that adapts the Mercury harness to the Honda. These very often caused trouble and were discontinued.

You are doing the right thing, getting rid of all that Mercury stuff. The engine will shift and throttle up so much more smoothly with the Honda shifter, etc.

If the existing gauges work ok with the motor now, they will be fine after you rewire them with the gauge harness.

When you go to plug things together, you will find you will have an extra plug at the engine that is not used and several under the dash. So do not be alarmed.

If you have a wiring diagram, just follow that.

So, it sounds like you just need throttle and shift cables and the key switch harness....and time and patience.

If you have questions along the way, just continue with this post.

24918-ZY3-7100

Mike - Thank You so much. The cable 24918-ZY3-7100 was the missing link. I found a picture of the cable connectors on this cable and matched them up to the main 14/20 wire harness and the instrument and switch cables. It looks like most will match up with only a couple of extras. This should make for a boat that my son is proud of. Fortunately there is a Honda dealer 15 minutes from the house. I think they also distribute out of Georgia. With any luck we can have this in the water in the next week to 10 days. The shifter is sealed, all the parts are there. I hope it fits into the hole without a lot of trimming. I appreciate your help. I do a lot, not much intimidates me, but the lack of info on rigging this thing was daunting. Your email came right at the right time tonight as I was staring at these cables. I'll get the cables measured and ordered tomorrow. Rory

Hondadude. Time to go forward with this project. See my new post. I could never find the 36170-ZW7-110AH that you referenced. Is this the same as the 36170-ZW7-010AH?

The 36170-zw7-110ah is the newer version of the 010ah harness. http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/h...Lc9XAXE3397Rt4Wdh4rd1wZ3Rqvi6-VifCxoC4ELw_wcB

It plugs into the 20 wire harness to the engine and the key switch and the kill switch that you have plugs into the 110ah. The wiring harness for the gauges plugs into the 110ah also.

....and away you go.

By the way...you may need to get longer control cables if you are going to go to the binnacle mount. Instead of the cable coming up and going almost vertical into the side mount box, as before....you will need make a gentle bend to get to the back of the binnacle mount and come into it more horizontal. You need the sweeping bends so that shifting is smooth.
