Bf45 shifts into reverse only

i took off the lower unit and

i took off the lower unit and the shift rod only goes down. I can't pull it past neutral. how does the shaft come out? i have a factory manual but it doesn't have any info on shaft removal it just says remove shaft. HELP

I tried that. The only thing i can think of is the roll pin that holds the push rod to the shift rod is coming out and it is getting hung up on the case. Have you ever experienced this? Thanks for any input- Scott
