BF40A wont start

"Got a problem with my BF40A,

"Got a problem with my BF40A, it worked well last time I used it (about 12 months ago) but wont start now.

I checked the fuel and it had water in it so I completely drained the tank, flushed it with fresh fuel and changed the underfloor water separating fuel filter completely(the whole unit).

Still wouldnt start...

I changed the in engine fuel filter, checked the plugs and even though they looked ok I repaced them with new ones, tried again to start it, no go.

I drained each of the carb bowls, pumped clean fuel through them with the bulb, tried again, still no start.

I checked the spark by removing a plug lead and putting a screw driver into the lead and grounding it to the motor lift point, couldnt see a spark so in desperation I grabbed hold of the blade of the screwdriver and there is CERTAINLY enough spark to scare my cardioligist!

I havent got a detailed enough manual to risk stripping down the carbs myself but is there anything else I can try before taking it to the Honda stealer and parting with loads of cash?

"You should be able to clean your carburetors (most certainly needed after a year of 'storage' ...) without a 'manual'. Remove them while tagging removal locations of lines and linkage.

Take just the first one apart, before removing the 'idle' screw, first count half-turns in, just barely to stop. This will give an initial setting on re-assembly, but if you turn it in 'tight' it will damage needle and port.

With care, you should be able to reuse gaskets & 'O' Rings. Carburetor Cleaner will take the skin right off your hands, so use caution with that and you should also get some Alcohol Solvent, to use in soaking, cleaning and rinseing. If you don't have compressed air, buy an aerosol canned 'air' that is used for computer maintenance.

Take your time to clean EVERY port, passage and vent as thoroughly as you can and then put that first carb back togather as you dis-assemble the second and that should provide all the 'manual' you need. Your float-height setting should remain, but confirm that they are all the same, if not, you would need the manual.

The Honda 'Shop Manual' for your engine would be a very worthwhile investment, usually less cost (and better) than an after-market manual that tries to cover ALL HONDA's from '95-'05..

You will also find that your Local Free Library will have (or can obtain) many books for you to check out and learn from."

I was just wanting to rule out the small things I could try first before taking it to the dealer.

If its going to be a full clean of the carbs, I'll take it to the stealership.

I dont have a undercover work area to perform anything thats going to take a long time.

I'll get a manual and learn how to do it myself in the long run."
