BF2D won't start/what year?

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and have a Honda 2hp 4 stroke that came with a boat I bought. It won't start. I don't know how long it has been since it was run, and the previous owner hasn't responded to my questions about it. I also don't know what year it is so I can get a manual for it. The prop doesn't turn when I pull the starter cord, so based on some info from another thread, I'm guessing it's post 2007. The serial number is BZBF 1200255.

It had very little gas in it so I filled it with fresh fuel. I checked for spark - it seemed a little weak and the base of the plug was a medium brown color and looked a little oily so I put in a new spark plug. The fuel shut-off lever is in the open position and the safety clip is in position. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Paul

It is a 2001. The model number is BF2D1.

There is a screw on the bottom of the carburator that you can access through a hole in the bottom of the engine case.

It is for a flat head screwdriver. Back that screw out and drain the carburator into a glass jar. You will have to have the fuel switch on. Hopefully, fuel flows out. If not, you probably have a stuck float and gooed up carburator. If it is flowing, let it flow until any dirt etc comes out. This does not guarantee you still do not have a carb problem, but at least you know there is good fuel in the carb.

To start it....advance the throttle a little farther than the start mark on the handle. Have the choke pulled out. It should at least high on the first or second pull. If it starts to kick back on you, you have flooded it. Then push in the choke and advance the throttle as far as you can. Be ready to grab the throttle so it does not overrev if it starts.

If it does not start, it is probably gooed up in the carb.

The motor does not have big spark. You can pull the spark plug and check to see if there is any compression. It should be around 128psi if you have a gauge. If you do not, put your finger on the hole and see if it sucks and blows.

The prop does not move because it has a centrifugal clutch to engage the prop.

It does not have an impeller, so for quick tests to see if it starts, you do not need water. For any running more than a few seconds, you should put it in water (garbage can, etc.)

If you do not have an owner's manual, you can download one at http://marine.honda.com/Owners/Manuals/models/BF2 by serial number.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info Mike. I have another small outboard so there was no pressure to get the Honda going and I had forgotten about posting here. I will try your suggestions later today.

I loosened the drain screw and at first nothing came out, but then I noticed a thick, syrupy looking fluid draining out. I pulled the starter rope a few times until normal looking gas came out of the drain, but it still won't start. I'm thinking that means the float is stuck or something so I'm going to have a go at disassembling the carb. I don't have a service manual but it looks pretty simple...is there anything critical I need to be aware of as I pull it apart?

Thanks,
Paul

Download a parts diagram from boats.net, so that you know what parts come out. It does sound like it needs a good cleaning.
