BF25 water question

I recently bought a 97 BF25 and never had it in water yet but in the tub I noticed water running out at the top f the gear case. I noticed 3 holes that make it seem rite but never had an outboard do that,
IS this suppose to do that?
also I found what looks sorta like rusted metal pieces in the gear case around the pump. looking up into the houeing it looks good. Where do you think that debree came from? wasn't a lot but some+

what damage does saltwater do to a motor? the metal rust I found in the upper gear case has me bothered. It is magnetic. cant see were it could have came from
